Vintage Thingy Thursday...Floral Designer

Today I thought I would share with you some of my vintage collection of Floral Design Treasures. Being a self-taught floral designer I am always on the hunt for vintage floral design items. I have "picked" a few of my favorites to share today! Seems like the old metal floral frogs are making a major come back, I often use some of mine to hold old photographs, but the more rare type of floral frog is a plastic one. I have a boxed set of plastic "FLOWER FASHIONERS" by Gadjo company in their original box. These plastic frogs are intended for a small container and have a rubber suction cup on the bottom which you can attach to the bottom or side of a container. They are very lightweight compared to metal or glass frogs. These are from about 1940 and are very fun to use as they are so lightweight you can use them in so many places.
I also love to page through a 1966 book by Marjorie Scott Way called "Essential Forms For Flower Arrangement. This is a very inspirational and informative book that guides designers both accomplished and novice to design without feeling like they have to follow the "rules" of floral design. My favorite book is a 1957 edition from the editors of Better Homes and Gardens. This book shows everything from using the color wheel in design, proportion, balance, harmony and basic shape. The book guides you through learning basic shapes and containers. It encourages you to break the "rules" that beauty of design is in the eye of the beholder!

Thanks for letting me share my Vintage Treasures with you all today! Treat yourself to a bit of fun and floral designing...pick up a bouquet today for yourself...YOU deserve it!

  1. These are great. I love the glass ones, I have a couple I picked up somewhere, don't do anything with the, but they are really a neat item. And the flowers do sound like a great thing...I might have to get a bunch today! Have a great week.

  2. Now neat! Nowdays they use a lot of tape and wire - not so many frogs and SPIKES! I enjoyed looking at your goodies, and flowers? This time of year? Sounds pretty good - I should go buy me some! Thanks for sharing!

  3. One of the things I like about VTT is seeing things I've never seen before. I have some glass frogs, but have never seen the plastic or metal ones. Thanks for expanding my knowledge on frogs! I just may have to go get some fresh flowers for my fresh looking kitchen.

  4. Blast from my past are the plastic ones with the rubber suction cup. Weren't these made by Tupperware? I can't remember but my mother had a few around in the kitchen drawers.

  8. Hmm, cool entry. I worked in a flower shop for two years, and still kick myself for not going to design school, that they wanted to send me to. Sigh, hindsight regrets, but anyway, still good memories that I never would have thought of without seeing and reading your VTT entry for today!

  17. *sniff* I'm late to the party...*sigh* Darn that Google Ghost, now it's messing up with my "feeds" too!!!

I love yer vintage floral items. Those plastic frogs are so unusual that I've never even seen them at an estate sale! I've just seen the metal teeth ones, and I have an old glass one, too...

I admire your designing talent. It's funny how someone like you can take a bunch of stems and make a lovely arrangement, yet others with the same flowers would not make a pretty display! You have that elusive "eye" for design!
